2 /5 Dhiman Manjeet (MANN): Recently visited Moti Mahal Restaurant and tried their Chole Bhature, Aloo Parantha, Chilli Pakoda, and Tea. I had decent expectations going in, but unfortunately, the overall experience turned out to be disappointing.
Starting with the Chole Bhature, the presentation looked fine at first glance, and the bhature were soft and properly fried. However, the biggest issue was the chole itself. The gravy lacked depth, richness, and proper seasoning. It felt very bland — almost as if basic spices were missing. There was barely any noticeable salt or masala, and the flavor didn’t have that authentic Punjabi kick you expect from this dish. Without strong, flavorful chole, the entire dish fell flat.
Additionally, the bhature were extremely oily. There was so much oil that it was clearly visible pooling on the plate (as seen in the photo). Instead of feeling light and fluffy, they felt heavy and greasy, which made the dish even harder to enjoy.
The Aloo Parantha was another letdown. Texture-wise, it was cooked fine — slightly crispy on the outside and soft inside — but the stuffing lacked proper seasoning. It tasted plain and under-spiced, missing salt and that bold masala flavor that makes a good parantha satisfying. It didn’t feel fresh or flavorful, and because of the bland taste, we couldn’t even finish it.
The only item that was somewhat enjoyable was the Chilli Pakoda. It had a decent crisp texture and a better balance of flavor compared to the other dishes. While it wasn’t outstanding, it was definitely the best among everything we tried.
The biggest disappointment of the visit was the tea. It tasted like it was machine-made rather than freshly brewed. The flavor was quite bitter and lacked the richness and aroma that good chai should have. Instead of being comforting and flavorful, it felt overly processed and not enjoyable at all.
Overall, the main issue with the food was the lack of seasoning and spices. Most dishes felt underwhelming and bland, especially missing salt and proper masala balance. Combined with the excessive oil in the bhature and the poor tea quality, the experience was disappointing. We ended up leaving almost half of the food uneaten, which is never a good sign.
Unfortunately, this visit did not meet expectations. With better seasoning, improved flavor balance, less oil in preparation, and fresher tea, the experience could be much better. As of now, it was not a satisfying visit for me.
