3 /5 Linda: We visited Mapo BBQ with a group of 7 and ordered the Whole Duck Feast ($130) and Everyday Beef set ($120).
The restaurant itself is a nice space with a good atmosphere, making it comfortable for group dining.
The duck feast was good value for the price, with plenty of meat. However, all the duck was the same cut, which made it feel repetitive and a bit boring by the end. The soups that came with the set were slightly too salty and didn’t contain much substance.
The kimchi fried rice was meant to be prepared tableside, but this was forgotten. After we reminded the staff, it was made in the back instead. Unfortunately, when it arrived, the rice was soggy and wet. We left it on the hot tray hoping it would crisp up, but it never did.
The beef set was underwhelming. The beef belly was sliced very thin and became extremely hard and chewy once cooked, making it barely edible. On the positive side, the beef finger meat and LA-style Korean ribs were tasty and enjoyable.
One standout dish was the corn cheese, a generous portion, and served in a proper dish rather than an aluminum tray, which helped prevent burning. This was a nice touch.
Service started off strong, with attentive refills of side dishes during the first 20 minutes. After that, it noticeably declined. Our server rarely checked in, side dishes and water jugs weren’t being refilled anymore and finished plates and bowls were left on the table for a long time. We eventually had to stack them ourselves to make space and flag them down to clear it.
